Carlova Narcisse perfume bottle Societe Parfumer, Lalique inspired Ambre Antique

Description

Here is an empty perfume bottle made by Carlova around the 1920s. The name of the fragrance was Narcisse, and it was sold as part of Carlova's Societe Parfumer product line.
The bottle was made by Bingham New York Factory.  It was modeled closely after the Lalique bottle used by Coty for its 1911 fragrance, Ambre Antique.
The bottle is 6 and 1/8th inches tall. It no longer has its glass stopper or its labels. Inside the mouth of the bottle, there are remnants of the cork plug to which the stopper had been attached. Around the lip of the bottle, there are some places where the glass has been chipped.
The bottle no longer has its patina to highlight the silhouettes of the four women depicted on the bottle.  However, when you display the bottle against a dark background and add some bright lighting from the side or from the rear, you can really appreciate the beautiful silhouettes.  Please view all 12 photos attached to this listing.

e need to be clear that although the Lalique 'Ambre Antique' inspired Carlova, it is not a direct copy in several respects. The style of stopper is quite different on the Carlova to the Lalique. Also the Carlova has a long glass plug on the stopper with a cork insert on the plug. As collectors, we certainly recognize this cork and plug feature as being an American glass design element. The glass by Carlova is in a different category as well. This glass is bottle glass and not the demi-crystal made famous by Lalique. The classical Greek ladies on the bottle are quite similar on both bottles, although the color and quality of the patina are quite different. The original Coty 'Ambre Antique' was in a lustrous sienna patina highlighting the details of the bottle while the Carlova exhibits more of an opaque surface wash that lays on the surface of the glass. Finally the Lalique bottle also has a prominent 'R. Lalique' signature at the base.
I feel that this Carlova bottle is worth collecting by anyone who has an interest in the muddles of perfume history, or just a lovely American period perfume bottle with a Greek classical theme created in homage to a great French glass artist."
