Civil War Period Wallet - Decorated with an Engraved Mormon Beehive DesignMormon Beehive Civil War Era Fractional Currency Wallet
c. 1862 Civil War Era, Decorative Leather Fractional Currency Wallet measuring 2.25” x 3.75”, With Decorative Engraved "Beehive" Mormon Style Design, Choice Very Fine.
This is an original, very good condition tri-folded Civil War Period Leather Wallet with a "Beehive" engraved and embossed design through out the tri-folded currency flaps. This wallet an obvious “Mormon” design of the "Beehive" illustration. During the Civil War, the 13th, 14th and 15th New Jersey regiments were part of Torbert's Brigade, and they also chose the “Beehive” design to represent their brigade. In fact, a "Beehive" designed monument stands near the Weichert House on the battlefield, representing their position on the field during that battle. So it is a matter of speculation. This wallet could have also been designed for the regiment and sold to them by Sutlers, or had Mormon use, or something else. A lovely Fractional Currency wallet with three internal flaps of the size to specifically hold three different denominations of these smaller sized notes.
