Small Antique Chinese Painted Food Utility Box, Black with Colorful Paintings

Antique Chinese Painted Food Box.
This small rectangular antique Chinese wood utility box probably functioned as a food box, but may have had other uses.
Each side of the box is tapered so it is narrower at the bottom. There is a removable lid that slides into a narrow groove that is cut into 3 of the sides. The end of the lid is designed so it blends in with the rest of the box.
This antique Chinese Painted Food Box has a raised handle that is made up from 3 separate pieces. The side supports are bent to follow the angle of the box, while the section that raises above the box has a slight graceful curve. Near the top of the raised supports is a handle. The hand carved handle comes to a peak at the center. It is fastened with tenons on each end that go into mortises on the side supports
The box is finished in black an decorated with hand painted designs on all 4 sides and the lid. The designs are of fruit, flowers and leaves and are done in colorful shades of red, yellow, orange and green.
