Vintage Chinese-Taiwanese Hand Puppet – Gate Gods Shentu Yure, mythology, dolls

Puppet is new in package from mid 90s. Only removed for photographs. Will ship in the package. Vinyl package shows age from years of storage.
History
Chang-yi-fang continues three generations of work with “budaixi” or Taiwanese traditional puppet theater. Owner Chen I-tzu’s great-grandmother began sewing puppet costumes during the Japanese colonial era to earn extra money, while his paternal grandfather and father both carved puppet heads and were puppet performers in Taiwan.
Budaixi encompasses all the traditional Taiwanese arts, like embroidery, carving and performing.
Chang-yi-fang’s puppets are handmade in Fujian Province, China. Each puppet takes about two months to finish from the hand-carved and hand-painted head to the elaborate embroidered costumes.
Gate Gods Shentu and Yure
- The two gods are responsible for supervising all spirits and stayed above the gate. Evil and harmful spirits were tied up and fed to tigers. The gods were believed to protect people from disasters, protect "fortunes and dispell evil influences"
